Why pixel width matters more than character count

Google doesn't cut off your title or description at a fixed number of characters. It cuts them off at a fixed pixel width, because search results are rendered visually, not measured in letters.

A title full of narrow letters like "i" and "l" can fit more characters than one full of wide letters like "W" and "M". That's why two titles with the same character count can display completely differently — one gets truncated with "…" and the other doesn't.

How to use the SERP preview tool

  • 1.Enter your page URL, title and description in the fields above — you can paste them straight from your website's code or CMS.
  • 2.Watch the pixel meter under each field. Green means it will display in full. Amber means it's close to the limit. Red means Google will very likely truncate it.
  • 3.Check both device views. Mobile results allow slightly less space than desktop, so a title that fits on desktop can still get cut off on a phone.
  • 4.Adjust your wording until the preview shows the full message you want searchers to see, then copy the final text into your page's meta tags.

Common title and description mistakes

  • Title too long. Google truncates it mid-word with "…", which can make it look unfinished or unclear.
  • No description written. Google will generate one automatically from your page content — often an awkward, unhelpful sentence.
  • Duplicate titles across pages. Makes it hard for both users and Google to tell your pages apart in results.
  • Keyword stuffing. Cramming keywords in unnaturally reads badly to humans and doesn't help rankings.

Frequently asked questions

What's the ideal title length for Google?

Roughly 50–60 characters is a safe starting point, but the real limit is about 580 pixels of rendered width — that's what this tool measures directly, so you don't need to guess with character counts.

What's the ideal meta description length?

Around 150–160 characters typically fits, equivalent to roughly 920 pixels across up to two lines. Longer descriptions get truncated with "…".

Does Google always use my meta description?

Not always. Google sometimes rewrites it to better match what someone searched for. Writing a clear, accurate description makes it more likely your own wording gets used.

Will a good SERP preview improve my rankings?

Not directly — title and description length aren't ranking factors on their own. But a clear, complete, compelling result can improve your click-through rate, which is worth optimising regardless.
